HOW SMOKE FREE SHOULD WE BE ?

August 14, 2005 5:43 PM

Do you want a smoke free environment in all public places or just some or none?

The government is consulting on new legislation to ban smoking in all workplaces except pubs which don't serve food. Cllr Margaret Begg is asking Warwick District Council to urge the government to go further and adopt comprehensive smoke free legislation to cover all enclosed public places.

Smoking

Should Smoking be Banned in all pubs?

She explained, " The current proposals are both dangerous to health and divisive to our communities. All workers need the protection of a smoke free environment, and dividing the pubs into smoking and non-smoking will divide our community. "As smoking tends to be heavier in more deprived areas, those areas will have pubs full of smoke serving alcohol but no food, while more affluent areas will have non smoking pubs offering food with their drinks. This means a bigger health divide and no incentive to smokers to fight their addiction. Smokers can always nip out for a quick smoke if they need to, and then join their non-smoking friends again."
