Charles Kennedy has said he believes it is possible to identify £15 billion within the current tax take to fund Lib Dem policies on free student tuition and free personal care for the elderly. He considers there is no need to tax more but he wants to change the pattern of who and how much to reduce the widening gap between poor and rich in this country. He commented, "Our 50p top rate of tax remains a viable and sensible tool in our arguments and one which the party must consider when it is time to put together our next General Election manifesto."
