We were sad to see Charles Kennedy resign as party leader recently. Charles led the party to significant electoral success both nationally and in our local councils. We wish him and his family well.
Details of the three leadership contenders are outlined below along with links to their campaign websites. Which one would you vote for?
Simon Hughes 54 - Party president and candidate for London mayor in 2004. Simon is concerned about the growing gap between rich and poor, "Britain has become a less fair society. Inequality in wealth is still increasing, as are inequalities in standards of health. Under New Labour, if you are born into a poor family now you are more likely to remain poor throughout your adult life." Simon wants fairer taxes to help the poorest in our country.
Sir Menzies Campbell 64 - The deputy leader and respected foreign affairs spokesman. A former Olympic runner and Scottish lawyer. Sir Menzies wants new thinking to liberate thousands of families locked in poverty and to reward environmentally friendly technology. As a true democrat, he is committed to the reduction of an overcentralised state. Critical local services such as schools and hospitals must be freed to respond to local needs.
Chris Huhne 51 - An economic journalist and former Euro MP, Chris has been a Westminster MP for eight months. Chris wants a rise in ecotaxes to reduce greenhouse gases. This would allow personal taxes to come down, especially amongst those on lower incomes. Chris also wants to give more power to local people and to protect our civil liberties.
