Leamington residents and the local Lib-Dem team are worried about the town's disappearing green spaces. They launched a campaign group 'SPAce' at Leamington Cricket Club this weekend. SPAce will be launched at Leamington Cricket Club on Sunday. Members will campaign for the protection of all the town's remaining green areas and will start by focusing on plans by Wimpey.
SPAce have already conducted a survey of residents in the area and SPAce co-chairman Mike Hobday said "Of the 127 responses, 125 opposed the loss of the open space at Leamington Cricket Club to residential development. This is not a 'nimby' response as 78 per cent of households do not overlook the club."
SPAce is supported by Liberal Democrats in Leamington. Cllr Eithne Goode said, "The fine buildings and open spaces of Leamington Spa were the legacy of those that founded the town, it is important that we retain these to maintain the quality of life in the town and allow it to breathe.
Alan Beddow, Liberal Democrat Parliamentary Candidate for Warwick & Leamington said, "We cannot keep tearing up the public spaces and fine buildings we have in Leamington and building high density developments. This would only change the character of the town and remove its soul."
Phil Bennion, Lib-Dem regional Spokesperson for the response to the RSS, bowling for Leamington.
The launch was attended by Phil Bennion the Liberal Democrat regional spokesperson for the party's response to the West Midlands Spatial Strategy. Phil said, "I was glad to be able to come and see for myself the affect these decisions have on towns such as Leamington." Phil, a cricket enthusiast was able to try his hand at a few Overs on the pitch with other campaigners.
