River Leam Litter-Pick (From left; Nick Denney, Nick Pittarello, Maria Denney and Amanda Turner
Local residents took matters into their own hands at the weekend by organising a litter pick to clean up the riverside near Princes Drive following the summer flooding. Maria Denney said, "we often use the riverside paths to exercise and just recently the state of this area has been so bad, I just had to do something about it". The garbage trawl included the liberation of three traffic cones from the river, countless bottles, cans and plastic (all duly recycled). Nick Denney added "I found it very satisfying to help clean up the area - it does make a positive difference to how you feel about the area but unfortunately it makes you more aware about litter elsewhere". Coun Nick Pittarello (Milverton) commended the group's efforts and said "it is very encouraging to see young people taking active action to improve our local environment for the benefit of all, and I am pleased council officers were able to provide support for this endeavour".
Although the group spent several hours clearing the river banks, there still remains much to do, not just here but elsewhere in the area. If you are interested in joining a future clean-up, or would like to suggest an area that could benefit from a blitz please email litter.blitz@yahoo.co.uk
