20,000 jobs safeguarded in Coventry & Warwickshire - Highest boost anywhere in Britain.

April 12, 2011 9:17 PM

Deputy Prime Minister and Liberal Democrat Leader, Nick Clegg, has announced the first group of companies and partnerships that have successfully bid for investments from the Regional Growth Fund. The plans will create more than 20,000 jobs across Coventry and Warwickshire, the highest boost anywhere in the country.

The Regional Growth Fund was set up to stimulate and support jobs, growth and enterprise in the private sector. The first round sees £450m going to 50 companies and partnerships who demonstrated how they would create jobs and support sustainable local and regional economic growth.

Commenting, last years Liberal Democrat Parliamentary Candidate, Alan Beddow said, "Coventry and Warwickshire is set to benefit from such projects as supporting JLR at Gaydon to develop a new family of engines in the Midlands and for a new vehicle platform for technologically advanced vehicles. Overall governement estimates show over 20,000 jobs created or safeguarded in the Coventry and Warwickshire area, the highest anywhere in the country.

"It shows this Government is committed to promoting growth in manufacturing in contrast to Labour's high-risk and discredited strategy of relying on bankers in the City of London. Britain needs to get back to making things again," Alan Beddow added.

Commenting further, Deputy Prime Minister and Liberal Democrat Leader, Nick Clegg said:

"Re-balancing our economy away from the City of London to make economic growth more sustainable is a fundamental part of the Coalition Government's economic strategy. The Regional Growth Fund is here to change that and to help businesses and communities up and down the country."

Commenting further, Liberal Democrat Business Secretary, Vince Cable said:

"The overriding aim of the Regional Growth Fund is to support businesses where they can make the biggest difference to their community and to the region: creating private sector jobs in deprived areas that were forgotten under Labour. The Regional Growth Fund's investments announced today are only the first step. Further stages will see more money invested to creating thousands of jobs, driving the British economy forward."
