Warwick & Leamington Lib-Dem's Support Climate Change and Sustainable Energy Bill.2.22.08pm GMT Mon 5th Dec 2005
At the Warwick & Leamington Liberal Democrats AGM held on the 25th November, Local Member Matthew Rhodes spoke about Climate Change and Sustainable Energy. Matthew explained that there are two issues that face us, Climate Change and the decreasing capacity of our current energy supply. These are issues that affect us all and will have a direct impact on our society. Yet there are things that can be done, Matthew outlined how Woking Council started to reinvest any savings made through energy efficiency measures in further improvements to the local energy system, at no net cost to the taxpayer the council is now 99% independent of the national grid and have created a long-term source of jobs and wealth creation in the local community. After a discussion of Matthews talk, a motion was passed to call upon The Government to show more leadership and vision in promoting green technologies. We would like to see The Government taking an active role in encouraging the development in these technologies and in energy efficiency through investment, tax incentives and in reviewing the use of energy in government buildings. We wrote to Andrew Stunell MP, the Liberal Democrat Spokesperson for Energy. "It is excellent that your group whole heartedly supports micro generation and energy efficiency, as we do." Andrew replied and explained that our motion shares the principles of two Private Members Bills, "The Climate Change and Sustainable Energy Bill" and the "Management of Energy in Buildings Bill". Warwick & Leamington Liberal Democrats shall be writing to Malcolm Wicks (Energy Minister in the DTI ) and Yvette Cooper (ODPN Minister), as well as the Prime Minister and our local MP to support these bills. We shall keep you up to date on our progress on this site. Related Links:Link to the "Climate Change and Sustainable Energy Bill". Link to the "Management of Energy in Buildings Bill".
